MARK JASON MELLIGEN AIMS HIGH

Hot jr. welterwieght prospect Mark Jason Melligen is back in Cebu after a string of victories in the United States. Mighty Mark attended the press conference for the Summit Fight Night VisMin Tour held at the Sugbahan Restaurant in Mandaue City last Friday. He answered questions from reporters and talked about his experience in the U.S. including sparring with former pound per pound number one Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Most boxers would have been greatly intimidated by Pretty Boy Floyd but not Melligen. He relished the chance to be in the ring with Mayweather despite being at the receiving end of the American’s clowning and trash talking. He did manage to catch Floyd and land a few punches of his own.

The southpaw Melligen said his extensive amateur experience has served him well. He developed his speed when fighting in the shorter amateur contests which emphasized non-stop punching. He is a former SEA games silver medalist. He now has a four year contract with Top Tank and has impressed the promotional organization’s boss Bob Arum.

Melligen halted Gerardo Prieto in the sixth round in Colorado last March. He pounded out a unanimous eight-round decision over Ramon Montano in LasVegas on the eve of the Hatton-Pacquiao encounter. Last June 20, he stopped Fabian Luque in two rounds in a fight held in Baja California, Mexico.

Melligen reminisced about being booed by Mexican fans in Colorado but he managed to silence them after he started pounding his opponent going into the third and fourth rounds.

The 23 year old native of Bacolod City turned pro in 2006 and scored a first round KO over Roland Malonhao in Bohol. He now has a record of 15W-1L with 11 KO’s. His only loss was in South Korea in 2007 against YongSung Kim.

Melligen adapted a Spartan lifestyle in the U.S. He divides his time between training at the gym and going back to the home of Las Vegas- based trainer Tony Martin where he is staying. Training at Mayweather’s gym and his exposure to quality sparring partners has certainly boosted Melligen’s confidence and improved his skills.

Melligen is scheduled to fight in the undercard of the Nonito Donaire – Hugo Cazares WBA superflyweight title bout this August against a still to be named opponent. Melligen has big dreams. He feels he is ready for a title shot in the next one to two years. He dreams of fighting boxing’s big names like Mayweather, Ricky Hatton and David Diaz.

Melligen eyes Floyd

MARK Jason Melligen has idolized former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. since he was an aspiring boxer.

Sparring with him at Roger Mayweather’s gym for his first fight in the US last May was a dream come true.

However, he has a bigger dream.

“I really want to fight Mayweather,” said Melligen.

Melligen said if given the chance, he has what it takes to defeat Mayweather Jr. —ring smarts and determination.

“I believe I have a chance of winning against him.

All you need is this and this,” said Melligen, pointing to his head and then his heart.

The 23-year-old former amateur boxing standout said sparring with Mayweather Jr. had a huge effect on his performance for
his last three fights.

“He gave me a huge boost of confidence.

I would say to myself, ‘I’ve sparred with Mayweather so I can deal with a fighter like you,’” said Melligen of his motivation during his last two fights in the US and Mexico.

Melligen had impressive victories in the US, stopping Gerardo Cesar Prieto in the fifth round in his US debut and outscoring former Manny Pacquiao sparring partner Ramon Montano.

In his latest battle, he stopped Mexican warrior Fabian Luque in the second round in Mexico last June 20.

Melligen said he was praised by the 32-year-old Mayweather Jr. after tagging him with a powerful punch to the head in their sparring session.

Lucky shot

“He told me that he was proud of me because I hit him. I had a hard time hitting him because his head is so hard to hit but I targeted his body and luckily hit his head,” said Melligen, who believes that his style has similarities with Mayweather’s.

Melligen feels that he would be given a title shot by Top Rank soon but he isn’t rushing himself.

“I’m not in a hurry for a world title. I can wait. It’s all up to my promoter,” said Melligen.

Melligen is also open to fighting Ricky Hatton, David Diaz and Michael Katsidis.

Melligen will return to the ring on on Aug. 15 at the Hard Rock Café in Las Vegas. He will be in the undercard of Filipino world champion Nonito Donaire Jr.’s fight against World Boxing Association super flyweight king Hugo Cazare

TRIPLE M, MIGHTY MARK MELLIGEN, WON ON A 2ND ROUND TKO

BY Rod Mijares, June 20, 2009

The pride of ALA Boxing Gym of Cebu, Philippines and Top Rank Promotions best kept secret and top young prospect, Mark Jason Melligen, won by 2nd round technical knockout over his opponent Mexican Fabian Luque as relayed by Tony Martin, Melligen's hardworking trainer, from Ensinada, Mexico where the fight was held.

Melligen started hot from the very first round putting his opponent on the canvas. Luque was able to beat the 8th count but was so wobbly to fight back or defend himself. As such, he was thankful that the bell saved him and gave him a respite from further punishment. However, Melligen continued where he left off in the second round and again knocked down Luque. He did beat the count but Melligen continued his barrage until the referee could not take it anymore and has to stop the onslaught to avoid further damage to Luque.

Over 2000 Mexican fans in a standing room and jampacked arena witnessed one of their own going down twice at the hands of Melligen. After the fight when the boxers where hanging out with the fans, the Mexicans were congratulating Melligen for a very spectacular win akin to Manny Pacquiao's style. Mark Jason Melligen, no doubt, has added Mexican fans to his side.

Edito Villamor, Melligen's long time trainer from the Philippines was also in his corner to assure the win. With this very convincing win, Melligen made another historic rise one step closer to his dream of a championship fight in the very near future.

With Manny Pacquiao in almost certainty leaving the boxing world and entering Philippine politics by 2010 with the belief that he will be of more help to his countrymen as a congressman rather than a great boxer, Melligen will surely be one of the Filipino promising boxers who will be filling Manny's big shoes in promoting boxing interest and thus, continue bringing excitement to boxing fans worldwide.
Melligen is scheduled to fight to yet unnamed opponent on August 15, 2009 at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino as an undercard of the Interim WBA world super flyweight title fight between Filipino IBF/IBO flyweight champion Nonito Donaire and Mexican Hugo Fidel Cazares. He has now a record of 15 wins (11 KO) and 1 lost (1KO).

Patience

Patience is really important! But as of know, i really don't have that at all. Tomorrow, i will know if Mark is having a fight scheduled on June. Hopefully he does because we're talking about the next Manny Pacquiao here.
